Finished watching The Perfect Couple on Netflix yesterday. Meh. The murder reveal at the end made sense, but the little bit “after 6 months” was a very weird catchup interaction between two characters.

Since it was based on a book, I thought that last scene maybe made more sense if you’d read the original source … except maybe not, as the murderer in the limited TV series is different than in the book ?!

Today, I finally figured out why The Perfect Couple felt familiar in a way …. it’s like the 2.5 star version of the 5 star Knives Out (common girl amongst rich eccentric family).

So, IMHO, watch Knives Out instead of The Perfect Couple - you’ll save 4 hours and get a much better story and more interesting characters.

Binge finished the Korean drama “Doom at Your Service” on Netflix.

Premise is a woman who has 3 months to live due to brain cancer makes a contract with Doom (Death/Destruction/bad stuff that happens to humans). She finds out, after the fact, that there’s a severe consequence if she breaks the contract early - the person she loves the most will die…. so in order to save the world and herself, she tries to fall in love with Doom.

The variations of how they both try to manipulate and deal with the terms of the contract is the bulk of the show. Some light comedy, much more drama and feelz, so have the Kleenex box nearby for the last few eps.

There’s also a substory of the woman’s best friend figuring out her own love triangle.

The characters are interesting and Doom’s house is amazing in a seriously singular-vision interior designer way. Some of the extreme traits for the side male characters gets annoying to me, but I’ll assume it’s for comedic effect for the intended Korean audience.

The pacing felt weird at times, but there are enough moments that mattered for me to keep watching. I also really wanted to find out who the friend chose in the love triangle (it’s was a guy I liked - yay!).

Mom and I tried the first of the Jack Hunter films …. and didn’t need to watch any further. Kinda of a C-grade Indiana Jones. Which lead us to talking about … Indiana Jones.

So we watched the good (odd-numbered) ones: Raiders of the Lost Ark, IJ and the Last Crusade, and IJ and the Dial of Destiny.

I told her we could skip IJ and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull … which reminded her of one of her favorite Stargate SG-1 eps.

So now we’re watching SG1. Starting at the beginning of Season 3 because that season has her ep.

Endgame (2011) is a rewatch for me, new to Mom. A good show if you like Leverage or solving mysteries that don’t need a dead body in every episode.

Premise is a Russian chess master can’t leave his hotel due to the trauma of seeing his fiancée killed in a drive-by shooting in front of the hotel. Shawn Doyle plays the lead (loved him in The Expanse and Star Trek: Discover). The A story is the case that is solved in each ep; B story is the investigation of why his fiancée was killed.

There’s one season of 13 episodes, though if you don’t want to see a cliffhanger that is never resolved because the show didn’t get a second season, don’t watch the last ep.

Finished watching Class of ‘09 on Hulu. It follows the lives of a group of students going through Quantico/FBI training.

Interesting non-linear storytelling across three timelines: Past (when the characters go through their Quantico training), Present (their current assignments), and Future (where they end up).

It’s 8 episodes and billed as a “suspense thriller” but has aspects of sci-fi in that it presents the near future (2035) with AI and some cool body mods.

It was interesting to watch as it went along. The ending seems too quick and easy for all they had built up, so my final feeling about it is “meh.”

If you want to find out more, search for “class of 09 hulu” or you’ll end up with a bunch of entries about an anime show. 🎓

Finished watching Shogun on Hulu last night. I liked what they did with it, and the production values are impressive. Great acting and impressive locations. Just the fabrics alone are worth watching.

I read the book in junior high, so can’t compare it to the show (best way to get out of classroom busy work is after you finish what was required, pull out a 1000 page novel and start reading 😉).

Binged through Mrs. Davis yesterday. Loved the writing and mystery and reveals and acting and themes and contrasts. It’s 8 eps on Peacock streaming and has an ending; no second season needed.

Damon Lindelof wrote several eps and was an executive producer, so the show has the oddness and intricacies of LOST, but IMO stays on track better [with the caveat I couldn’t make it past the 3rd season of LOST]).

The A.I. aspect is reminiscent of Person of Interest, though definitely not as black/white good/evil.

Going to start (re)watching it with Boyfriend tonight at a much slower pace (he doesn’t binge fiction like I do).

Thanks to a recommendation from clairevp I watched the new Disney+ series, Percy Jackson and the Olympians. 8 eps that cover the first book. Really enjoyed the show. The kids are great, the scene between Percy’s mom and dad in the bar is so special, and the sets/environments are fun - especially like how they represented Hades’ realm.

I had read the book (a looooong time ago), so knew some of the twists, but didn’t remember all of them.

I wish they had a different ending theme (too much like the Marvel Avengers music), but adore the graphic design in the credits.
