Purple swatches yielded only one true purple. 🤔

Will have to play with mixing reds and blues to find some more purples I like some day.

Still have browns and grays to swatch for this set, but I’m considering my NostrArtstr art challenge for this November completed. 🎉

No “final art” was created; that wasn’t the goal on my art challenge. I did do more with these tube watercolors than I have in 2 years, so I consider this a Win.

Still a few days left in November if you want to join and Play with Color (this month’s theme). Even if you only do a single thing, if it’s more than you would have done without participating in this art challenge, You Win. 👍🫂

Finished up my blue swatches. Had never heard of Indanthrone Blue but I love it! 💙

The indigo in the book was swatched in 2022, so I did another on a strip of similar paper with less water to record the darker values.

Starting green swatches… though not sure what part of Prussian Green is, well, green. 🤷

Went ahead and swatched the turquoise because it was there, then ended this page with some nice greeny greens. 💚

Had extra paint come out of the tubes when I mixed them, so played on various papers … all are 300 g/sm2 cold press ….

1. Artist Loft - Michael’s brand, Level 2 (3 is Pro), I just don’t like the look of it., will likely use the rest of this pad as a base layer for mixed media projects.

2. Fabriano - 25% cotton, higher end than #1, it works

3. Arches - 100% cotton, this is the Good/Expensive Stuff, I like it the best because of how the colors seem to stay a bit more vibrant and the look of the texture of the paper.

Love the Naples Yellow Pale, though I’d call it Parchment. The other Naples would make good flesh tones, but they don’t look ‘yellow’ to me.

6-10 are definitely my definition of Yellow. 💛

Today’s watercolor orange swatches:

1. But not the yellows that are for a reason I don’t understand in the middle when going by the manufacturer’s numbering. So I skipped the yellows.

Felt like I should have known ochre would be that brown.

Cad orange waaay more yellow than orange, the same way cad red was waaay more orange than red.

2. Mixed up some with the scarlet red, which made some nice fall oranges.

Mixed up some with the quinacridone red because it’s so pink, just to see what would happen: still an orange, but that pinkiness is subtly there - I think this color would be amazing for orange roses.

Finished swatching the last red tubes of watercolor.

2. Then played around on some leftover strips of paper. Not sure what kind, probably Canson Mixed Media 160g as it’s thinner than the 300g I’m using for the swatches.

The strip at the top was the first, down to the bottom strip as the last.

Didn’t like any of them until strips 7-8, where I had an idea of how to use them beyond this session.

The last 2 strips were playing with light washes and trees and people.

So yeah, creating art is also all the crap you make on the way to something you actually like. 👍

All set to swatch these watercolors as my NostrArtstr November Art Challenge: Play with Color. 🎉

Or not … because apparently tube watercolors can separate if you leave them alone for, ah, 2 years. 😅

After reading some online articles of how this happens, it’s not a big deal, and you can remix the pigment and the arabic gum together again with a paper clip, I got to swatch some reds. 🎉

I have 3 more reds, but want to let these dry before turning the page.

And yes, that cad red pale is way orange, but it had “red” in the name so I pulled it into this set. Since I listed them in manufacturer’s order in the book, I assume the oranges will fill out the rest of that page. I just wanted to start with red. 🔴
