Got behind on the NostrArtstr May art challenge due to a few headache days before we had storms.

Then I was fine… and still didn’t draw the flowers.

Whenever I avoid doing something, I try and figure out why.

The realization I came to was: I enjoy creating the art challenges more than I enjoy doing them. At least daily. And at least this flower one.

I’m really excited about the September art challenge because I’ve had that idea for a while (and yes, I also enjoy planning ahead 😬).

So, here’s the totality of my May art challenge:
- 5 drawn flowers (really liked how the calla lily turned out, so it made for a good ending point)
- 31 flower icons from the tracker pages, cut out and edged with black marker, and glued to the flash cards (just in case I want to come back to this someday)
- cover and back panel ready for assembly when I get home

Buttercup practice and flower id flash card. I’ve also started making more notes on the practice page so (hopefully) whenever I come back to these I’ll still be able to draw a version I like. 🌼

This is a meadow buttercup; Persian buttercups look quite different.

The yellow light that appears on someone’s chin when they hold a buttercup flower is due to the light reflective structure of the petals, which also helps attract pollinators.

Bluebell flower practice and final flower ID flash card.

Apparently nearly half of the world’s population of a species of bluebell is found in the UK. And it’s from British folklore that fairies would use bluebells to call each other together.

Practice sheet and final flower id flash card for Begonia.

When looking for references, turns out there are A Lot of different flower types for begonias. There are also male and female flowers, with the males having multiple layers of petals and the female usually only having one layer…. so that info ended up being my text clues.

My drawing isn’t as “begonia” as the reference, but for this project, it works. ✅

Proof of concept for flower ID flash cards, my May art challenge implementation:

- my flower drawing on one side with a hint for the flower name

- flip over to see flower icon from the NostrArtstr tracker and flower name

I’ll hole punch and ring them together when I get home.
