This is a mixed media piece I created using scrapbooking paper, a Sharpie marker, a pair of tiny scissors to cut out the letters, an X-acto knife to cut out the shadow areas of the bamboo, and a glue stick to put the shadows back after interweaving the letters.

When I started concepting my #nostrichnovember project, I wanted it to fulfill two goals: practice drawing with Procreate and have a mixed media background. Here’s a corner of the art board where I finally have the texture and colors that fit the 1920s fashion nostrich I drew and colored.

I usually work with 19th century images, so the parchment/vanilla/brown/coffee-stained look fits right in with engraved and hatched art. Doesn’t really work with the clean fashion lines and patterns of Art Deco.

So I decided to keep the background to black and white, and leave the color to the dress and the nostrich.
