It’s here!!! Puzzle I mage is lighter and less saturated than the original artwork, but all the lovely layers of mixed media detail can still be seen. 😍

I choose the “garden” template, so the whimsy pieces on the left are all garden-related things.

I definitely recommend Wentworth if you want a high-end custom wooden puzzle. 👍👍

Done!!!! I’m soooo happy how this mixed media piece turned out. 😍

Lots of person stuff in the layers related to my mom:
- her garden notes on the siding
- crossword puzzle in the black area of the door
- blueprints of her house in the door frame
- quilt pattern on the table
- a copy of her gecko sketch with my colors
- based on a photo I took of her flowers on her patio

Now to tweak the colors a bit in Photoshop and send it off to Wentworth to have custom jigsaw puzzle made.

Now that I’ve built up enough orange acrylic paint on the flowers, I can add yellow liquid acrylic to flow into the grooves.

Probably going to repeat that process one more time, then add stems and a few leaves.

Still a work in progress, but closer to the end than the middle now. 🤞

Going to the quilt store de-stash bash this morning made me realize I didn’t have “quilting “ represented in this piece. Mom’s made some amazing quilts over the years.

I printed a simple block pattern onto tissue paper and glued it down with matte gel medium. Will stain it blue after it dries.

Still building up acrylic paint layers on the flowers. The more paint I lay down, the longer it takes to dry, so have slowed down a bit.

Still a WIP, but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel now.

After my dad went into a full-care facility (ALZ), my mom moved into a new, much smaller, house. It was part of a new cul-de-sac just being built, so we had blueprints. I made a copy and am using strips as texture for the door frame.

The more I focus on this art being a gift for my mom, the more parts I’m finding that incorporate into the whole; much more than my first attempt.

And, still very much a work in progress. 😁

So … didn’t like where the first attempt ended up and am starting over. I have to like any of my art that leaves my house.

Glued a color print of my base sketch to a 9” x 12” art board. Covered it with clear gesso to create a paintable/non-slick layer. Scrubbed around with colored Stabilo pencils. Glued in paper with Moms handwriting (notes from an old garden journal I made her). Dribbled on some alcoholic inks.

Next layers will likely be acrylic paint and tissue paper and stamps.

Already I like this one so much more than the other. 😁

Hat is done. Now waiting for glue to dry on the garden gloves.

Hat and gloves are paint and ink drenched tissue paper glued to copy paper. The hat lines were drawn with a Fabre-Castell PITT Artist Pen.

Think I’m going to leave the gloves as is, since they have a rubbery look already.

Current state of the art board. Once this layer dries, I’ll work on the door frame and glass, which will just be a darkish gray to provide contrast with the flowers.

Second image is a close up to show the texture the Faber-Castell gelatos can provide if you don’t brush water over them.

Step 3: wash of yellow from a Stabilo water-soluble pencil. Even though more stuff will go on top, this gives the whole a shared undertone.

When the painter worked on my mom’s living room walls, he said the color she chose was like sunshine. So we call her place the Sunshine House now. 🌞

After this, there aren’t any defined steps - it’s just me playing with paint and process and texture until what’s on the board is close to the image in my head, or looks good enough to me to stop.

15 & 16 / #29daysplushielove - I was helping an artist with their booth in the dealer’s room of a pop culture convention and while on break, browsed the other tables. Both pandas were on display as you see in the photo, at the dealer across the aisle from us. I spent a long time looking at them, but didn’t have a lot of spending money, so only bought Mizu (little panda). At the end of the convention, as everyone is packing up, the dealer came over and gave me Ishi (large panda). That was as about 10 years ago; a wonderful act of kindness.
