Finished watching Mo Dao Zu Shi / Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation / The Master of Diabolism, a Chinese anime (donghua) on Crunchyroll.

Written by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu (same author as Heaven’s Official Blessing), there’s 3 seasons which cover most of the events in the original novels.

Just as with Heaven’s Official Blessing, this is an intricate story of decades of relationships and motivations. The surface investigations all lead to the real mastermind in the end. With an added bonus. And then one more that re-frames everything you thought you knew.

Very impressive writing. 👏

The opening and ending animations are gorgeous and symbolic, and especially for season 3, are rife with OMG spoilers that just look pretty until you understand what’s really being portrayed. 🤯

Tried watching the Alderamin on the Sky anime. Made it over halfway, but it’s not for me; some themes were too close to reality and that’s not how I want to spend my entertainment hours. Boyfriend had already seen it and thought it was good. I did watch the last ep which leaves you with a feeling that all of this was prologue.

The anime came out in 2016 and there hasn’t been any more, so if you want the rest of the story, you’ll need to find the manga or light novels as English fansubs or in the original Japanese.

I almost didn’t watch this anime because the main graphic felt slightly horror to me, and I don’t do horror. Gave the first ep a try, and really liked it. It’s isekai, meaning the protagonist is from our world and is sent to another world (usually fantasy based) which is where the story takes place, but with a neat twist I hadn’t encountered yet in this kind of story.

The first season is completely out on Crunchyroll, and has a conclusion, but there’s obviously a lot more to the story, which is based on an online novel by South Korean author Milcha.

A webtoon (digital comic meant to be read on a phone) was also made and illustrated by Whale.

The anime covers through Episode 50 of the webtoon, and the rest (147 eps plus a few epilogues) is available at https://www.tappytoon.com/en/book/raeliana - you can read the first few for free. I looked at them are they the same as what happens in the anime.

Found a new shoujo anime to binge: Sugar Apple Fairy Tale. Interesting take on fairies and their dynamic with humans. It started as light novels, then manga, now anime. If it holds up, I may try the manga since there’s usually more to the story there than in a season of animation.

Putting SPY X FAMILY on hold until Boyfriend is back from his trip. Now into a rewatch of S1 of The Saint’s Magic Power is Omnipotent. It’s an isekei anime, which means the protagonist is transported from our world to another, usually fantasy/RPG/D&D based. I watch with subtitles as I really enjoy the Japanese voice actors - so much nuance even in just the word “hai.”

We finished watching Nier: Automata Ver1.1a and have moved on to SPY X FAMILY. They are all doing their best to keep their little family together, despite all the secrets. Has heartwarming moments amidst the wacky ones.

Just watched the ep with the dog.

Yor’s character design reminds me of Ginrei from Giant Robo.
